Big travelers have become a symbol

We also like moving birds in our country. We admire them for their dedication, instinctively, to return to their wintering place and then back to their breeding ground.

Throughout its history, Strasbourg belonged to the Germans and the French, which made it feel like fighting for the area. It was so important because of the location of the Rhine town, but not only the people saw it, but also the long-legged and beaked migratory birds, the storks. They regularly visited Strasbourg to breed and then returned to their wintering grounds. But over time, their numbers in the city of Alsace declined. Legend has it that the locals were so eager to lure storks back to their towns, and even to stop them, so they freed the birds from their tails and were unable to make the long journey. Although the story seems rather old-fashioned, the storks were well on their way. Even if they had stayed for the winter, they were fully catered for and the city has been home to many storks ever since.

The white stork is such a beloved bird in Strasbourg that it has become, besides the city coat-of-arms, a symbolic bird featuring souvenirs in the form of plush figurines and flags. The stork is a herald of spring, but also a symbol of loyalty and happiness. Precious birds.
