The couple lived as tenants for the apartment in Szombathely. For the duration of their vacation, they entrusted an acquaintance with the care of their animals. The 11 cats and 2 dogs required constant supervision, so an acquaintance of the couple moved into the apartment at that time. The couple had just returned home in front of the block when they noticed flames flaring in their apartment. They immediately rushed in, broke down the door, allowing their acquaintance to escape safely. The couple's two dogs were found intact, but the 11 kittens died in smoke and fire.

Other families living in the block also had to be temporarily relocated, but no one needed hospital care. The burned-out apartment became uninhabitable.
