Humans are the biggest enemy of many animal species, considering that many of them are extinct due to our work. The Berber lion is one of them.
The Barbary lion, also known as the Nubian lion, lived in Africa, but their numbers dwindled significantly, and the last living specimen was extirpated from the world in 1992. at least the copy was believed to be the last.
However, you can find some individuals in zoos and circuses. It is questionable how pure their genetics are.
The specimens at Port Lympyne Wildlife Park and Addis Adeba Zoo are believed to be genuine Barbary lions, with the unique characteristic of males having black manes. However, even this is not a guarantee that they are pure individuals, because it also appears in some lions living in captivity. Therefore, it is difficult to determine whether they are pure Berber lions or not.
