At first they thought the puppy was just hiding on board somewhere, but in vain they searched, not finding him.

It was then clear that Jessica wasn't on the boat, so they got on the water and searched the area, but they still couldn't find her. As is customary and effective on their social networking site, the owners have announced that their puppy is gone. How well they did, because one day a man showed up. He presumably found their dog in his garden, which was 11 miles from the scene of his disappearance.
