But many bored animals end up in shelters or let go into nature. If it is not a native species, it can also be a serious natural problem.
The finding of a very young alligator turtle found at Délegyházi Lakes suggests that the siblings and parents of the small turtle, who are a few days old, may also be nearby.
Small alligator turtles are harmless, however, adult animals already fall into a different category. Domestic keeping of alligator turtles, originally native to America and Canada, is possible under a dangerous livestock permit. It is likely that the trifle now found is the successor to a bored and released specimen.
Although adult alligator turtles do not pose a threat to humans, they can cause serious damage to the Hungarian wildlife as an invasive species. They can also displace the marsh turtle from their habitat if they multiply too much.
