Every year they choose the animal species of the year. They have also selected one of the reptiles that they will focus on in 2020.
As in previous years, the Amphibian and Reptile Protection Section of the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Association selected the reptile of the year. This time the crusader viper was chosen.
Not everything is black! With this calling slogan, they wanted to dispel some of the misconceptions about the Crusader viper. One of the most widespread reptiles can be found in Hungary, but the crested viper is one of the most widespread. However, it occurs only in a few places in our country. The cross-country viper likes flat terrain where water and swamp can be found. Nevertheless, it can also be found in mountain areas.
The crested viper is an venomous snake, but does not always attack with venom. In the first round, try to scare your attacker by hissing, whistling loudly. Failure to do so may result in milling, but even without poison. In his very tight position, he is already forced to use poison, which affects circulation and muscle function.
Viper attacks are very rare in our country, and many decades ago, two deaths were claimed by the milling of the crusader and the other domestic species, the crayfish viper.
